Overview

Job Summary

Assistant Program Directors provide leadership across all camp programs, including coaching staff, working with school groups, families, managing daily operations, and problem-solving in unique situations. They are supervised by Sr. Program Directors and perform other duties as assigned. This is an Authorized Driver position; see Position Qualifications for details.

The Fall 2025 season runs from August to November.

Compensation

New hires: $140/day; returning staff: $155/day for the second season; $175/day for three or more seasons.

Responsibilities

As Assistant Program Director, you will:

  • Lead outdoor education programs for school groups and family camps.
  • Contribute to the camp team through communication, solution-oriented suggestions, and role modeling.
  • Supervise seasonal staff, providing coaching and feedback.
  • Ensure participant safety and accountability.
  • Plan and facilitate developmentally appropriate activities.
  • Maintain high standards of cleanliness and safety in all facilities.
  • Create staff schedules and assist with marketing.
  • Serve as a Program Instructor when needed.
  • Communicate needs to supervisors promptly.
  • Attend all meetings and trainings.
  • Follow YMCA policies and procedures, including safety and emergency protocols.

Specific Roles

  • Outdoor Environmental Education: Plan and deliver programs, host groups, and gather feedback.
  • Conference & Retreat: Similar responsibilities tailored for conference groups.
  • Office Assistant: Manage supplies, customer service, mail, and camp store.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

Work is seasonal and residential, indoors and outdoors. Housing varies by position. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and perform physical activities.

Position Details

This full-time, seasonal role involves a 5-day work week with 2 days off, including training and meetings. It is exempt from wage and overtime laws.

Qualifications

  • 21+ years old with valid First Aid and CPR certifications.
  • 2+ years of camping/customer service experience.
  • Ability to respond to emergencies and work as part of a team.
  • Driving record must meet standards; position is a safety-sensitive role requiring a valid driver's license for at least 3 years.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with diverse populations and anti-racism practices.
  • Knowledge of challenge course safety standards.
  • Passion for nature, youth work, and social-emotional development.
