Overview

We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Welding Engineer to join our engineering and manufacturing team near Wadsworth, Ohio. In this role, you will drive welding excellence, ensure optimal joint quality, develop process standards, and support continuous improvement across production and R&D functions.

The right candidate will be strong in both Controls and Design, with a preference given to candidates stronger in Controls.

  • Salary Range: $80,000 – $140,000 per year (base; depending on experience, skills, abilities, and certifications)

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and optimize welding processes for various applications, including but not limited to MIG, TIG, stick, resistance, and automated/robotic systems.
  • Evaluate welding procedures and materials, then establish and document Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), Procedure Qualification Records (PQR), and Welder Performance Qualifications (WPQ).
  • Conduct welding feasibility studies, root cause analysis, and failure investigations using methods such as visual inspection, NDT (e.g., ultrasonics, radiography, dye penetrant), and hardness or tensile testing.
  • Collaborate closely with production, design, quality, R&D, and supply chain teams to ensure manufacturing methods meet industry and project standards.
  • Monitor welding operations onsite, offering guidance and technical support on process control.
  • Lead continuous improvement projects—identifying cost-saving opportunities, enhancing welding quality, upgrading productivity, or addressing safety concerns.
  • Stay current with industry standards (AWS, ASME, ISO), participate in audits, and recommend compliance strategies.
  • Provide training and mentorship for welders, operators, and technicians on proper welding techniques and best practices.
  • Document technical findings, create reports, and present them to leadership for informed decision-making.
  • Support supplier qualification and evaluation, ensuring they meet company and industry welding standards.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Welding Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or related discipline.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in welding engineering or a similar role in a manufacturing environment.
  • Proficient in creating and evaluating WPS, PQR, and WPQ.
  • Hands-on familiarity with common welding processes (MIG, TIG, stick, robotic welding).
  • Experience with NDT techniques for weld inspection and quality assurance.
  • Comprehensive understanding of welding metallurgy, joint design, distortion control, and weld defect prevention.

Preferred

  • Certified Welding Engineer (CWEng) or Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) – AWS or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated experience optimizing welding processes for productivity and cost-efficiency.
  • Familiarity with welding automation and robotic cell programming/tuning.
  • Relevant project management skills and experience with both new project development and process troubleshooting.
  • Strong technical communication skills and collaborative practice.
